Conference and workshop logistics

The conference and workshop will take place in Moricetown, a First Nations community located in the traditional territory of the Witsuwit’en (a.k.a. Wet’suwet’en) people. Moricetown is about 34 km/21 miles north of the town of Smithers, and about 44 km/27 miles north of the town of Telkwa. We anticipate that most conference and workshop participants will be lodged in Smithers. We will provide bus service to/from the workshop and conference for those staying in Smithers.

Driving directions to Moricetown

From Smithers, take highway 16 west about 34 km or 21 miles. When you are getting close to Moricetown you will see Moricetown canyon on your right, and a teepee (visitor's center) on a hill overlooking the canyon. Proceed about 1/4 mile west on highway 16. At a flashing yellow light the community hall (site of Friday session) is on your left. It is a large beige building surrounded by plenty of parking space. At the flashing yellow light a road crosses the highway. This is Beaver Road. Just ahead on the right is the Moricetown fire department with totem pole in front. The Saturday session will be held at Moricetown Elementary school. To reach the school, turn right on Beaver Road and follow it through the village about 1/4 mile. There is new construction going on at the school so it will be quite obvious as the existing building in the middle of the construction site on the righthand side of Beaver Road. There should be no construction activities on Saturday so it should be possible to park near the school on the right side of Beaver Road. There is also parking outside of buildings on the left side of Beaver Road.

Getting to Smithers

\

There is an airport in Smithers, currently with twice-daily flights from Vancouver. There are two car-rental companies which operate out of the airport, National/Tilden and Thrifty.

It is also quite easy to get to Smithers by car. Smithers is also located on the Yellowhead Highway (16), about 4.5 hours west of Prince George.

For more information about Smithers and the surrounding area, visit the web site for the Smithers Chamber of Commerce, or send them e-mail. The Adventure Smithers web site also provides an overview of the area, including snapshots of some of the lodging options.

Lodging options

Conference and workshop participants need to make their own arrangements for lodging. A list of motels and bed-and-breakfast establishments in Smithers is provided below.
