"TARPENT, Marie-Lucie (Mount Saint Vincent, Canada) TSIMSHIAN AND PENUTIAN Evidence for the phylogenetic relationship postulated by Sapir (1921) between Tsimshian and Penutian appears more and more elusive in the light of the knowledge gained in the last decade about the lexicon, structure and history of the Tsimshianic languages (Dunn 1979; Tarpent 1983, 1986, 1987, 1990). Detailed work based on years of first-hand research is now making it possible to assess previous claims by non-Tsimshianists (eg, DeLancey, Genetti, and Rude 1989). What data remain as admissible evidence are either so scanty or so vague as to make the postulated relationship more doubtful than ever."
