Bragging rights
In March, the Alaska Nanooks rifle team hosted the 2007 NCAA championship at the Patty Center for the first time in school history. They defended their title and were crowned the national champions in front of more than 900 fans.
Nanook student athletes succeeded in the classroom, earning an average grade-point average of 3.17 during the 2006-2007 academic year.
Clemon “Clem” Johnson, a member of the 1982-83 Philadelphia 76ers team that captured the National Basketball Association championship title, was named the Nanooks’ interim head men’s basketball coach in May.
In June, Alaska Nanooks' new head hockey coach Doc DelCastillo became the seventh head coach in the history of the UAF hockey program.
Former Alaska Nanook defenseman Darcy Campbell signed a two-year contract in March with the National Hockey League’s Columbus Blue Jackets. Campbell is the fourth player in the history of the Nanook hockey program to skate in an NHL game.
