2009 - 2010 accomplishments

The alumni relations office was active throughout 2009 - 2010 engaging alumni with UAF.

Below are some of our successes from and goals for the past year.

Partnerships & visibility
The UAF alumni office sponsored and co-sponsored 38 events in the Fairbanks area. Those events drew more than 3,150 students, alumni and friends from the local community and helped reinforced their connections to the university.

The alumni office and, its chapters, held or co-hosted 11 alumni events which attracted more than 335 alumni and friends in Juneau, Nome and Anchorage. These events allow our alumni to maintain their connections to UAF, regardless of where they reside.

Alumni in-residence connection
The alumni association/relations office maintains a strong relationship with our alumni in-residence though our partnership with Career Services during its job shadow program held over spring break; co-sponsoring the UAF Leadership Lunch series; sponsoring the parent's reception during new student orientation; providing cookies, coffee and hot chocolate during fall and spring final weeks; advising three student organizations; providing funding for student or residence hall projects through its benefactor program; and hosting the graduation celebration and commencement receptions. The office staff has been nominated for the Make Students Count award four times, recognized as a bright star by the UAF Student Affairs division and awarded Outstanding Staff member by the Associated Students of UAF.

Contributions
The alumni association and chapters have contributed over $30,000 to UAF for multiple projects to include the new UAF Hall of Fame display and have provided students of alumni $10,000 through seven endowed scholarships.

Legislative Advocacy
The alumni association/relations office assisted ASUAF, the Coalition of Student Leaders, UA statewide and the alumni association board members during their legislative fly-ins, sending e-newsletters on legislative issues with the UAF Advocacy office, testifying at legislative hearings and hosting the 12th annual ice cream social in the speaker's chamber.

Office usage
The alumni association/relations office offers use of the alumni lounge for classes and meetings. Allowing groups access to the lounge provides students and alumni a greater connection to the campus and increases the association/relations' visibility within the Fairbanks community. We had 70 student, alumni and administrative groups use the lounge for a total of 320 events in academic year 09-10.

Initiatives
The alumni office continues to pursue new ways to connect with our alumni. Here are some current and future initiatives:

  • The association has increased its stewardship by sending over 1,500 congratulatory or condolence notes to alumni and family of alumni. The goal is to reinforce our commitment to recognize alumni accomplishments and to strengthen our connection during both happy and sad occurrences.
  • The association continues its use of social networks to include: LinkedIn, MySpace, Facebook and Twitter. These sites have allowed the association to communicate with students, faculty and alumni about upcoming events and news. We also are able to use the information received by alumni to update the Raiser’s Edge database with up-to-the-minute information on addresses, careers, e-mails, phone numbers and other pertinent information. We have over 2,600 alumni and friends contacts on the sites.
  • The alumni association/relations department has created a new e-newsletter. The goal of the e-newsletter is to provide information to alumni and friends about the alumni association, university, athletics and upcoming events. The e-newsletter goes out to over 9,500 alumni and friends monthly.
