The AGLA Resources Catalog
The best guide to have to plan TG activities or locate TG resources in the Alaska area.
Version 1 - Production Version
This guide was created by Nicole and Debbie Cook. However a number of people put time into creating some of the resources I used to pull it together.
Section 1 - Out on the Town
In section one I have tried to capture the TG night life possibilities in San Francisco and the surrounding areas. While the experience at these establishment may differ from visit to visit, we have tried to list all the places where the experience was fun.

Section 2 - Where to Shop
In this section we have tried to identify the places where some of us have gone to shop. There is a special emphasis here if the shopping was done en femme, but we also tell you about personal shoppers that will help you if you want to be very discrete. I have made a single pass at contacting all the vendors in this section. In each case I asked to speak to the owner or manager, I was very specific in who we are, and asked about shopping restrictions. If I did not get through and I thought the vendor was worth keeping I will indicate that in the description (I will fix these as I hear from them). Anyone who gave a negative or ambivalent response was dropped from the list.

The following set of shoe vendors are mail order vendor’s.
Maryland Square (800) 727-3895
This vendor is in Wisconsin; good, prompt service, women’s shoes only: everything from dressy to sporty shoes.
Wissota Trader (800) 833-6421
This vendor is in Wisconsin; good, prompt service, men and women’s shoes : slightly less variety than Maryland Square.
Coward (800) 362-8400
This vendor is in Tuscon, Arizona; prompt service, women’s shoes only: everything from dressy to sporty shoes.
Frankel’s Designer Shoes (800) 388-7463
This vendor is in Monsey, NY; Limited number of shoes in widths over "C". Delivery is often quite slow for no apparent reason. They have more dressy styles, but also casual and sporty. They feature matching shoe/handbag combos that are a bit pricy.
Shoecraft www.shoecraft.com (800) 225-5848
This vendor features sizes up to 15 which is something I like. They have flats, pumps, sandals, high heels, and New Balance tennis shoes, everything a girl needs. Unfortunatly the service is inconsistant. Sometimes it is good and sometimes it takes a while.

Section 4 - Professional Services
This section probably should get the most tips. Unfortunately, due to the way the medical environment has established itself with regards to us, some of the tips have to remain on a "word of mouth" basis. What I can say is this. With regards to transitioning to a new gender, a group of Medical (and Legal) professionals have formulated something known as the Harry Benjamin International Standards of Care for Gender Identity Disorders. There is both good and bad associated with this document. The good part is that it is a center repository for studies done on transgendered individuals, so doctors new to the field have something to go by to come up to speed on transgendered issues. The bad is that it frequently presents itself as a series of obstacles one must overcome to transition. For example, in order to get hormones you need to get 2 letters (it use to be one) from 2 psychologist, each of who had to see you weekly for at least three months. At $80-$120 per visit this could be as much as a $2,880 obstacle.
What I will say is this, ask around, not all doctors follow these standards of care, this does not make them any less concerned about your care. These doctors realize that not all transgendered patients can afford to go down the HBSOC path. And don’t get too hung up on the name (Standards of Care). If you read them it is clear that they are their to protect Doctors from being Sued as much as they are their to establish Standards of care for the patients. (This is not a bad thing, if you spent years training for a profession you would want to protect your livelihood from out litigious society too).

1801 Bush St., Suite 111, San Francisco, CA
MFCC License MU 22960, Board Certified Sex Therapist, Fellow, American Academy of Clinical Sexologists, member of HBIGDA, IFGE, TGSF and the Bay Area Gender Associates. His Ph.D. is in human sexuality and his dissertation concerned transsexualism.
He conducts his private psychotherapy practice in San Francisco, where he particularly welcomes people who live alternate sex and/or gender lifestyles, including TV’s, TG’s, TS’s and their SO’s. He also works extensively with people who are involved in consensual SM and DS, infantilism and fetishes of various sorts. Although he has a general practice where he works with people around issues of anxiety, depression and intimacy, as well as relationship concerns, his specialties head him to work a good deal with issues of coming out, guilt and shame, as well.
His orientation is fundamentally psychodynamic, in that he believes events that affect us early in life continue to affect us later in life until and unless they are dealt with. But he also works a good deal with normal dissociative processes. Consequently, his work sometimes also entails spirituality and problem solving. In addition to the usual talk mode, he also does some dream work and uses guided meditations; he is trained in EMDR, which he uses selectively.
Kim Hraca, M.A. MFCC (510) 601-1859
Berkeley, CA.
In our work together, my goal is to help you make conscious choices about the expression of your gender identity - however you define and come to understand this. Whether or not this entails a full gender transition, I can help you navigate whatever changes, gains or losses, that come out of being truer to yourself. Rather than take a pathological view of gender dysphoria or discomfort, I think that a lot of the pain people struggle with comes out of living in a culture that is highly transphobic and fiercely polarized regarding gender. Although I do follow the standards of care, my intention is to work as collaboratively as possible to be an ally rather than a gate keeper. I have been working with Transgendered clients since 1992 and am a member of HBIGDA.

My therapeutic approach is Existential-Humanist. That is, I am interested in the process of being. I believe that how we live our lives is ultimately who we are. I firmly believe in providing complete and compassionate psychotherapy for all my clients.
Being transgendered myself (SRS 1980) I know that my job as a therapist is to keep our work together well informed, honest, and thorough. Because individuals with gender issues have many of the same issues regarding living life others have. I try to serve not only as a sex transition guide, if sex reassignment seems appropriate, but as a full issues therapist. I believe that the more responsibility the individual takes in their therapy the more successful and more fulfilling their life will be. In addition to individual therapy, all of my clients are invited to attend on-going support groups.

Maureen is a licensed, credentialed speech and language pathologist. She has worked with transgendered clients in the areas of voice and communications skills since 1975. Clients are seen for an initial 2 1/2 to 3 hour consultation/evaluation session. Gender-based communication differences are discussed and the client's skills are analyzed in four main areas: pitch and vocal melody, voice quality, language use, and nonverbal communication. Diagnostic therapy tasks and client goals are also completed at the consultation. Many clients are seen for follow-up therapy sessions, most often 1 hour sessions every 2 weeks. Some clients are seen less often, or practice communication changes independently, after the initial visit. Group voice therapy is sometimes available. By the way two people from two different organizations have recommended Maureen to me.
