JAPANESE STUDIES

Description:

Japanese Studies is an interdisciplinary program, and students are encouraged to use this major in conjunction with a discipline-based major. It allows student to incorporate an in-depth study of Japanese language and culture to career opportunities.


General Interest Area:

Language, linguistics, history, geography, sociology, anthropology, and political science.

High School Background:

Japanese language, foreign languages, English, history, and geography.


Plan of Study:

Must complete Japanese language classes from the elementary level through the fourth year with a minimum B average, along with courses in Japanese culture and history. A semester of intensive study at exchange institutions in Japan is required, which often necessitates an additional year for student to graduate.


How to get Involved:

Take basic Japanese language courses; visit the Office of International Programs for Study Abroad information; join the Japanese Club (Fridays at 6p.m. in Gruening 609); and stay abreast of world news and events.


Career and Graduate Possibilites:

Many of the graduate are accepted into the JET program to teach English in Japan. Possibilities in language teaching at K-12 schools, interpreting/translating, international business and finance, tourism, and anthropology. The Alaskan tourism industry is especially rich in opportunity for those with Japanese language skills.
