Computer Science (CS) encompasses the theory, design, and programming of computers to solve problems in science, engineering, mathematics, and business, as well as the storage and retrieval of information from all areas of human activities.

In addition to study in the required courses, students may take elective in Database Systems, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, Automata and Formal Languages, Algorithms, Computer Graphics, and Computer Architecture.

The CS degree program consists of a core of required courses in data structures, operating systems, programming languages, computer hardware, and mathematics, in addition to the general university requirements for the Bachelor of Science degree. The required courses are augmented by elective courses in CS and related fields.

Opportunities for CS graduates span the entire spectrum of the public and private sectors, from working with small business computers to supercomputers. Employers of recent UAF graduates include: BLM, Fairbanks North Star Borough, Chugach Electric, ARCO, Golden Valley Electric, State of Alaska, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, Microsoft, Digital Equipment, FBI, NSA, and others. Independent contracting and consulting opportunities also exist in both the public and private sectors. Graduate education increases employment possibilities for supervisory and management positions.
