Graduate students

Thank you for choosing UAF for your graduate education! 

The Graduate School looks forward to working with you. We provide information and assistance to all graduate students, including orientation, teaching assistantship training and general administrative support.

Assistantships

Departments have limited teaching assistantships and research assistantships for full-time graduate students. For more information contact your department. Graduate assistants (TAs and RAs) can be paid for the equivalent of a maximum of 20 hours per week while school is in session. Students with assistantships must be registered for at least 9 credits during the fall and spring semesters. (Audited classes do not count toward registration requirements.)


Steps to take before you arrive:

1. Financial Aid

Financial Aid: Apply now for the FAFSA and scholarships.

Claim your UA username and password

Claim your UA username and password: You will need this to access multiple services available to UAF students as well as UAOnline, which serves as your student portal for registration, financial aid, housing and other services. If you need assistance logging in, follow the instructions for claiming or resetting your information. For more assistance, contact the OIT Support Center at 800-478-8226, 907-450-8300 or helpdesk@alaska.edu.

3. Check your residency

Check your residency: We may need additional information from you to approve in-state tuition (PDF). Your acceptance form will indicate your residency status or you can check UAOnline.

4. Academic Advising

Academic Advising: Class registration begins in early April for the fall semester and early November for the spring semester. For your first semester at UAF, you will need to connect with your advisor before registering for class.

5. Registration

Registration: Register early for your courses to get the best selection on UAOnline. Textbooks can be ordered online or purchased at the UAF Bookstore.

6. Get your UAF email address

Get your UAF email address: After you register for classes, make sure to set up your UAF email so you get important information from UAF. This email can also be forwarded to your preferred email address.

7. Housing and mail

Housing and mail: If you plan to live in a campus residence hall, complete and return the residence hall applicationIf you want to receive mail on campus, sign up for a mailbox online (PDF).

8. Dining Services

Dining Services: If you are going to live in a campus residence hall or you'd like a meal plan, please enroll in a meal plan. 

9. Health inventory and immunization record

Health inventory and immunization record: For students living on campus, complete the health inventory form (PDF) before arriving. Curious about services the Student Health and Counseling Center offers? Check out their website.

10. New Student Orientation

New Student Orientation: Orientation is recommended for new graduate students.

11. Paying for school

Paying for school: Financial aid is applied to your student account about two weeks prior to the first day of class. Check your UAOnline account for the arrival of your financial aid, to accept any student loans and pay your balance. The Office of the Bursar also has payment plan options and instructions on how to set up your direct deposit for any refunds.
