Freshmen

Applying to college can seem like a complex and confusing process. UAF Admissions is here to assist you throughout the process. Make sure to review the to-do list.

Admissions requirements
See the requirements for admission as printed in the current UAF catalog.

High School Qualifying Exam (HSQE)
To earn a high school diploma in Alaska, you must fulfill all curriculum requirements and satisfactorily complete all three competency areas of the High School Qualifying Exam (HSQE).

If you do not pass the HSQE, you will be admitted as a pre-major within the department of your choice. To move from pre-major status into a baccalaureate program you must be in good standing (2.0 overall GPA at UAF), and have completed 14 credits at the 100 level or above with a C grade average (2.0) or higher, 9 credits of which must satisfy general core degree requirements. Once these requirements are met, you will be admitted to the bachelor's degree program.

Western Undergraduate Exchange
The Western Undergraduate Exchange Program is designed to help undergraduates who live in western states pursue higher education at a public college or university outside their home state but within the Western region. WUE eligibility at UAF is reserved for incoming undergraduate students pursuing an approved certificate, associate or bachelor's degree program.

Alternative ways to earn credit
