Freshmen

Here's your application to-do list. Just follow the steps below, and if you need help, chat with one of our counselors!



1. Application for Admission

  1. Review admission requirements in steps 2a-2c below for your student type
  2. Apply for admission
  3. Take the SAT, ACT Plus Writing or Accuplacer (per your degree requirements)
  4. Submit required documents to UAF Office of Admissions

 

2a. Baccalaureate degree admissions requirements

For admission to baccalaureate level programs, applicants must fulfill either:

Option one:

  1. have a high school diploma*, and
  2. pass the 16-credit high school core curriculum (see Table 1) with a GPA of at least 2.5, and
  3. have a cumulative GPA of 3.0. No minimum ACT or SAT score is required,

OR

Option two:

  1. have a high school diploma*, and
  2. pass the 16-credit high school core curriculum (see Table 1) with a GPA of at least 2.5, and
  3. have a cumulative GPA of 2.5, and
    submit results of the ACT Plus Writing (preferred) with a score of 18 or SAT with a score of 1290.

Admission to a specific baccalaureate degree program is based on a combination of your high school GPA and completion of specific high school courses. See table for entrance requirements to specific colleges and schools within the university.

Test results from the ACT Plus Writing (preferred) or SAT must be received before a student can be fully admitted. Test results for English and composition must be less than two years old; for math, less than one year old. This requirement will be waived for students who have successfully completed, with a grade of C or better, the equivalent of 3 credits of 100-level math and 100-level English composition from a regionally accredited institution of higher education within the last two years.

* To earn a high school diploma in Alaska, you must fulfill all curriculum requirements and satisfactorily complete all three competency areas of the High School Qualifying Exam.

2b. Admission requirements for certificate or associate degree

For admission to associate/certificate programs, official documentation must be provided showing that the applicant:

  1. is at least 18 years old, or
  2. has a high school diploma*, or
  3. has a General Educational Development (GED) diploma.

* To earn a high school diploma in Alaska, a student must fulfill all curriculum requirements and satisfactorily complete all three competency areas of the High School Qualifying Exam.

Students under the age of 18 who will not have a high school diploma or GED prior to the start of their first semester are not admissible but may take courses as a non-degree student. Upon turning 18 they may apply for admission to an associate or certificate level program.

2c. Admission requirements for occupational endorsement

For admission to occupational endorsement programs, official documentation must be provided showing that the applicant:

  1. is at least 18 years old, or
  2. has a high school diploma*, or
  3. has a General Educational Development (GED) diploma.

* To earn a high school diploma in Alaska, a student must fulfill all curriculum requirements and satisfactorily complete all three competency areas of the High School Qualifying Exam.

3. Transcripts

All transcripts must bear an official signature and stamp of the school or college issuing them. They must be mailed directly to the UAF Office of Admissions, or submitted by the applicant in sealed envelopes from the issuing institution.

High School Qualifying Exam (HSQE)
To earn a high school diploma in Alaska, you must fulfill all curriculum requirements and satisfactorily complete all three competency areas of the High School Qualifying Exam (HSQE).

If you do not pass the HSQE, you will be admitted as a pre-major within the department of your choice. To move from pre-major status into a baccalaureate program you must be in good standing (2.0 overall GPA at UAF), and have completed 14 credits at the 100 level or above with a C grade average (2.0) or higher, 9 credits of which must satisfy general core degree requirements. Once these requirements are met, you will be admitted to the bachelor's degree program.

UAF's reporting code for the ACT is 0064; for the SAT, 4866.


Alternative ways to earn credit, including AP credit
Get credit for select courses by passing a competency test.
