Mary was raised in Portland, Oregon and, in 1999, came to UAF to play basketball for the Nanooks. In 2003, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication. As the result of her interaction with a national speaker while a UAF intern, a research internship was created for her in Washington, DC after graduation. In 2006, Mary earned a Master of Arts degree in English and spent the next few years teaching undergraduate English and Writing courses at colleges and universities in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska.
Mary, her husband, and their daughter are thrilled to be back in Fairbanks and a part of the UAF community. Her favorite activities in Fairbanks include: participating in the Midnight Sun Fun Run in full costume on the summer solstice, biking, hiking, watching the aurora, and showing her frequent out of town guests the wonders of Fairbanks and Alaska. She also enjoys attending concerts and plays on campus and Nanook Athletic events. Mary's current goal is to learn to cross-country ski on the 17 miles of ski trails on campus.

Mike grew up in Del Norte, Colorado, where his love of learning was born. After completing a master’s degree in creative writing at Colorado State University (where he also taught writing), he and his wife Rachel chose to venture north to Alaska. Mike loves writing, the Denver Broncos, sledding, reading, Mexican food, playing guitar, collecting sports cards, watching movies and exploring nature. He believes that higher education is the greatest tool of empowerment that anyone can utilize, and he can't wait to help the newest wave of UAF students rise to their potential.
