International students
The University of Alaska Fairbanks offers many opportunities for students and researchers to participate in global community at a world class research institution.
Undergraduate students
- Apply online and pay the $50 application fee.
- Register for and take the TOEFL or IELTS and have the testing agency send the results directly to UAF. The minimum TOEFL scores required for admission is 79. The minimum IELTS score required for admission is 6.5.
- Submit official academic documents (certified, official high school transcripts with English translation, if necessary) directly to an approved credential evaluation agency. We recommend using ECE, WES or AACRO and require the course-by-course evaluation.
- Submit official academic documents (certified, official high school transcripts with English translation, if necessary) directly to the Office of Admissions and the Registrar.
- Submit ACT Plus Writing or SAT scores. Both exams are offered worldwide.
- Submit a copy of your passport.
- Complete UAF's financial statement form (PDF). You will also need to submit a financial supporting document (usually a bank statement) showing proof of funding for the total cost of attendance listed at the top of the financial statement’s second page.
If you expect to receive transfer credit, provide course descriptions or course catalogs (in English) directly to the Office of Admissions and the Registrar.
International student application deadlines
- March 1 - fall semester
- September 1 - spring semester
Graduate students
All graduate applicants are strongly encouraged to review the website for the program they are interested in, as some academic units have additional, department-specific requirements. Failure to address departmental requirements may delay the admission process. Links to departmental websites, faculty bios and contact information can be found at the Graduate School website.

- Register for and take the TOEFL or IELTS test and have the testing agency sent the results directly to UAF. The minimum TOEFL scores required for admission is 79. The minimum IELTS score required for admission is 6.5.
- Submit official college and university transcripts (official record of your academic work which needs to include grades or marks) to be sent in English directly from your university to UAF Office of Admissions and the Registrar.
- Submit scores from the GRE if your department requires them or if your GPA falls below a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
- Submit your resume/vitae, which includes work and research experience, publications, patents, honors, professional and civic memberships, and foreign travel.
- Provide a Statement of Academic Goals indicating why you want to study in a particular program. Include your qualifications and educational experience.
- Provide three letters of recommendation from people able to speak to the quality of your work, character and ability to complete graduate study and research.
- Submit a copy of your passport.
