As part of a preliminary feasibility study into whether small scale nuclear energy is a viable option for Alaskan communities, the Alaska Energy Authority and the University of Alaska ACEP jointly hosted a Nuclear Energy Exploratory workshop at the Dena’ina Conference Center in Anchorage, Alaska on December 9th and 10th 2010.

The purpose of the workshop was to serve as a forum to discuss the current status of small-scale modular nuclear power technologies including design and permitting considerations, safety and security, economics, ownership structure, nuclear industry resources and environmental issues. The information was presented to help identify the next steps, if any, in considering this technology for Alaska. Participants included representatives from the U.S. Department of Energy, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, invited experts from the U.S. and Canada, Alaskan utility managers, native organizations, the Air Force, the Alaska environmental community, state agencies, the University of Alaska, and state and federal legislative representatives.
