Northwestern Alaska Career and Technical Center
The Northwestern Alaska Career and Technical Center (NACTEC) installed a wind turbine on their campus in October 2011. NACTEC is a joint-venture regional vocational center located in Nome that provides Bering Straits School District and Nome Public Schools high school students career and technical skills. One of the most recent programs developed for NACTEC students is the Renewable Energy program. In a hands-on environment, students learn about AC/DC currents, how to install photovoltaic systems and wind turbines, and how to research different renewable energy options. It was through this program that the NACTEC students helped construct a foundation and install a Skystream wind turbine as part of the Wind for Schools program.
In September 2011, eight students from the Bering Straits region worked alongside construction workers to constuct the foundation. They learned to pour concrete, install rebar and achors, and bury wires. Then, in October, a group of students came together to assist in the installation of a 45' tower and Systream turbine. This project provided students with the hands-on learning that both NACTEC and Wind for Schools strive for. Well done, NACTEC students!!!
