Implementation Guide Wind for Schools


 

STEP 1:          Contact WfS to Convey your Interest

  • State facilitator is the initial point of contact for getting the initial application and funding together
  • The Letter of Intent for schools that are interested in installing a wind turbine in 2012 are due by October 1st, 2011. If you were not able to make the deadline, contact us to discuss your options.  The Letter of Intent should include the school’s name, grade levels that will be served by the program, and the contact information for the primary contact.  It should also include a list of any school, utility and local contacts that you have made and that are supportive of the program (i.e. principal, teachers, superintendent, utility manager, tribal organizations).  Please let us know if there are any student organizations that will be actively involved in making this project happen at your school.

STEP 2:          Complete the Initial Application and LOS

  • This is a “profile” document
  • Collects information on the:
    • School
    • Local partners
    • Possible funding sources
  • This will include a letter of support signed by the principal, facilities manager, at least one teacher, and IT manager (if there is one).

STEP 3:          Community Teleconferences

  • The initial teleconference will occur after the community profile is received
    • Any interested party in the community should participate
    • Includes REAP, WiDAC
  • Second teleconference will occur after the school board resolution is signed
  • Core team teleconference will occur on a monthly basis
  • The core team consists of the principal, facilities manager, science teacher and any other project leads

STEP 4:          School Board Resolution

  • For schools installing a wind turbine-the School Board resolution agrees to contribute at least $1500 cash toward the wind turbine

STEP 5:          Fill Out Site Assessment  with WiDAC

  • This 6-page technical document will be filled out by WiDAC in close coordination with the Project Champion.  It includes information about:
    • Tower size
    • Foundation type
    • Permitting
    • Data acquisition system

STEP 6:          Complete Funding Package

  • Your funding package will be created in collaboration with REAP
  • Funding sources can include:
    • Local sponsors
    • Regional/Borough donations
    • Utility contributions
    • In-kind services
    • Program funding (raised by the program)

STEP 7:          Purchase Equipment

  • Skystream turbines are offered at a 40% discount and will be purchased and stored at Susitna Energy Systems (turbines can be installed by any authorized Skystream dealer)
  • REAP, WiDAC and the host school will work together to ensure that the proper equipment is ordered and the proper discounts are applied

STEP 8:          Turbine Installation

  • Installations will most frequently occur in the summer or early fall
  • Participants will include an authorized Skystream installer, WiDAC representative, and any local participants
  • Ground breaking ceremonies will be done the day after the installation (media)

STEP 9:          Curricula Commences

  • Assistence for all activities and curricula will be provided by WiDAC/REAP
    • very easy for teachers to implement
  • Will meet state standards
  • Wind for Schools website with curricula is online and constantly being updated
