Pacific Northwest Economic Region Conference

ACEP Director Gwen Holdmann will be speaking on Tuesday, July 16th presenting on Global Opportunities for Energy Solutions and chairing a session on Thursday, July 18th with ACEP Faculty member George Roe. Other ACEP attendees will be Julie Estey, Jason Meyers and ACEP Interns Fiche Ferreira Goncalves and Haley McIntyre.

Join over 600 key business leaders, legislators, and government leaders from PNWER's ten states, provinces, and territories to address the major policy issues impacting the region. The 23rd Annual Summit will be held July 14-19, 2013 at the Dena'ina Civic and Convention Center in Anchorage, Alaska.

July 19 – Idaho National Labs Visit and Guest Lecture | 2:00 – 3:15 - Duckering 531 (open to the public)

Representatives from Idaho National Laboratory will be visiting UAF and ACEP to meet with researchers and tour our facilities.  ACEP and INL have collaborated on previous projects involving energy storage and grid modelimg and we look forward to exploring further opportunities with these national experts.

Lecture:  “Idaho National Laboratory – The Nation’s Nuclear Laboratory”

Mr. Grossenbacher is the Director of the Idaho National Laboratory and President of Battelle Energy Alliance, LLC (BEA). His credentials and experience include leadership and management of large institutions with substantial efforts focused on technology research and development. Before joining Battelle, Mr. Grossenbacher had a distinguished career with the U.S. Navy, achieving the rank of Vice Admiral and Commander of the U.S. Naval Submarine Forces. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the U.S. Naval Academy, and he holds a Master of Arts degree in International Relations from the Johns Hopkins University. In addition, he completed the Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration Program for Management Development.  He is a leader with a refined sense of strategy, an in-depth technical knowledge and a focus on delivering results. He is one of only a handful of officers in U.S. Navy history to be awarded both the Stockdale and David Lloyd Awards for Leadership Excellence. As Commander of the U.S. Naval Submarine Forces, Vice Admiral Grossenbacher led the integration and consolidation of the U.S. Navy's Atlantic and Pacific submarine forces. He is noted for his ability to build and lead multi-disciplinary teams, to meet complex science and technology challenges, and to achieve success in developing and sustaining collaborative relationships with multiple stakeholders.

Delegation Tour of ETF on Friday, July 12th

Delegates representing Alaska, Idaho, Montana and Canada toured ACEP’s Energy Technology Facility on Friday, July 12th. This visit was part of a statewide tour focused on energy in Alaska. This tour was organized as a precursor to the Pacific Northwest Economic Region Conference occurring in Anchorage this week.

ACEP in the Community of Sitka

ACEP’s Biomass Coordinator, Amanda Byrd, will be meeting with the Sitka utility manager and the director of the Sitka Tribes of Alaska to discuss possible biomass options. Potential options include the usage of  fish waste to create energy which has the additional advantage of helping the community meet new FAA regulations prohibiting the dumping of fish waste into channels near airports.

CES Energy in the Evenings – July 22-26th

Cooperative Extension’s Energy Specialist Art Nash is coordinating a week of evening workshops. ACEP Researchers and other affiliates will be presenting on Integrating Renewable Energy in Alaska for participants in UAF’s Summer School Sessions as well as the community at large. These Sessions are being offered July 22-26 between 5:00 – 8:30pm in the REICHART Building, Room 138, and are open to the public.

Interns will be traveling to Delta Wind Farms to tour the facility with owner Mike Craft.
