Funding

How ACEP is funded…

ACEP projects span a broad range of renewable and fossil energy technologies, from small community resource assessments to multi-million dollar program initiatives.  ACEP focuses on areas where Alaska can play a significant leadership role in technology development, and works with a wide range of funding partners.  While in the past energy research at the University of Alaska has been largely federally funded, ACEP has a diverse portfolio of funding organizations with the large majority (87%) based in Alaska.

Facts about ACEP…

  • Since its inception, ACEP has received only $500k in base funding from the legislature through the University budget; To date every $1 invested by the state in ACEP has generated more than $10 in additional project funding.

  • After only 18 months in operation, ACEP is almost entirely funded through competitive awards and contracts. During that time, ACEP submitted an average of 3 proposals per month with a funding success rate of 64%.

  • ACEP currently has 23 funded projects totaling $5.7M and is managing an additional $7.5M in federal funding for the Denali Commission under the Emerging Technologies Grant Fund.

  • ACEP funding partners include a highly diverse cross section of state, local, private, tribal, and federal sources. Alaska-based entities account for 87% of funded projects – this indicates that ACEP is meeting its mission of conducting research for Alaskans.

  • ACEP has 12 core researchers and staff, with an additional 25 faculty from throughout the UA system affiliated with ACEP through projects.

  • Over 50% of dollars brought in through ACEP projects are funneled to other parts of the University of Alaska system as a consequence of ACEP’s model of building interdisciplinary research teams.
