Description: Statistics is the mathematics of the collection, organization, and interpretation of numerical data, especially the analysis of population characteristics by inference from sampling (American Heritage Dictionary®). Statisticians provide crucial guidance in determining what information is reliable and which predictions can be trusted. |

General Interest Area: Individuals interested in any physical, natural, social, or behavioral science or mathematics should consider a major or minor in Statistics.

High School Background: A good background in mathematics including at least functions and trigonometry is needed. In addition, study English, computer science, and science. Completion of advanced placement calculus and/or statistics courses is encouraged.

Plan of Study: Complete the calculus sequence (Math 200, 201, 202), Linear Algebra (Math 314), Probability (Math 371), Mathematical Statistics (Math 408), an introductory statistics course (Stat 200 or 300), Regression and Analysis of Variance (Stat 401), Scientific Sampling (Stat 402), Senior project (Stat 498), and an elective package including a minor in another program. |
