SOCIAL WORK

Description:

The Social Work program affords opportunities for students to discover more about themselves as they work to improve the quality of life for others, advocate for issues of social and economic justice for vulnerable populations and to acquire the skills, knowledge, and values to work with the diverse people and geographic challenges unique to Alaska.

General Interest Area:

Child welfare, aging, mental health, community organizing, rural social work, chemical dependency, women's issues.

High School Background:

A general high school education.

Plan of Study:

Social Work majors are encouraged to complete the university core requirements in their freshman and sophomore years in order to meet the general requirements for a bachelor of arts degree. Social work students then follow a sequenced academic study of social welfare policy and services, human behavior, values, ethics, research, and direct practice methods. In the senior year students are allowed to pratice social work under the supervision of a field instructor in a social service agency.

How to get Involved:

Contact the Social Work program office at 474-7240 or their website for more information.

Career and Graduate Possibilites:

Social Work graduates are widely recruited by public and private human service agencies to work with individuals, families, groups and communities to resolve social and emotional issues.
