Description: The Japanese Studies major focuses on student acquisition of the four skill areas (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) in addition to the development of cultural awareness and competency. A unique aspect of the major is the study abroad requirement which enables students to develop advanced language skills while gaining firsthand expereince of Japanese culture and society.

General Interest Area: Language, linguistics, history, geography, sociology, anthropology, and political science.

High School Background: Japanese language, foreign languages, English, history, and geography. |

Plan of Study: Must complete Japanese language classes from the elementary level through the fourth year with a minimum B average, along with courses in Japanese culture, literature, history and more. A semester of intensive study at exchange institutions in Japan is required, which often necessitates an additional year for student to graduate. |

How to get Involved: Take basic Japanese language, literature, and/or culture courses; visit the Office of International Programs for Study Abroad information; join the Japanese Club (Fridays at 6p.m. in Gruening 609); and stay abreast of Japanese news and events. |

Career and Graduate Possibilites: Many graduates are accepted into the JET program to teach English in Japan. Other possibilities include language teaching at K-12 schools, interpreting/translating, government employment, interpreting/translating, international business and finance. The Alaskan tourism industry also provides a variety of opportunities for those with Japanese language skills. Pursuing additional study at the graduate-level would also open up various additional opportunties.
