The School of Education offers a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education (BAE), and a post-baccalaureate certification option for students to attain a teaching certificate. The program requirements are designed to prepare students to meet national and state standards for quality teachers, and to meet standards that recognize, respect and build upon the unique cultural, linguistic and geographic factors specific to the Alaska context. The program is accredited by NCATE standards until 2009.

Students seeking elementary certification at the Fairbanks campus may choose to complete one of two options: a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education (BAE), or a post baccalaureate licensure program for students who already have a bachelor's degree from an accredited university. All students complete the Elementary Teacher Education program, which consists of education theory, foundation courses, and an intensive, year long internship in an elementary classroom. A minor in education is available for those not seeking certification.

English, social studies (particularly U.S. History and American Government), mathematics (algebra and geometry), foreign language, arts (art, music, drama), and natural sciences (biology, earth science, physics, and chemistry).

The Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education is an interdisciplinary degree, with very specific requirements. Students completing this degree benefit from collaborative efforts among several academic units within UAF, preparing them for successful teaching at an elementary level. The BAE provides numerous opportunities for students to connect theory and practice in a variety of real classroom, school and community contexts. Students, who have previously completed a degree in another area, can complete the post-baccalaureate elementary certification program. Interested students can take Ed 110, Becoming a teacher in the 21st Century, this 1-credit course is designed to introduce students to elementary education and the School of Education's degree program.

Students pursuing a major in elementary education should also seek opportunities to work with youth by volunteering time to a classroom, an after school activity, or through a camp, club, sports team, or church. Students may also participate in the UAF club Alaska Native Education Student Association (ANESA), which provides support for Alaska Native education students, and all students who are interested in teaching in Alaska's rural schools. Ed 110 - Becoming a teacher in the 21st Century, is a 1-credit course designed to introduce students to elementary education and the School of Education's degree program.

A degree in elementary education leads to a teaching position in an elementary classroom (K-8). Some choose to become education specialists for programs, youth activities directors (Camp Fire, Girl Scouts, etc.), and summer camp directors. Some graduates will substitute, or work as a liaison in a specific area. Additional post baccalaureate coursework can lead to an additional endorsement(s) or a graduate degree. Positions in administration or guidance and counseling require a graduate degree.
