Automotive Technology is directed toward individuals that want to learn how to diagnose and repair automobiles and light trucks. Due to increasing complexities of newer power trains and the increase of the use of electronics the industry has a shortage of qualified technicians. Automobile technicians use a wide variety of skills which range from using electrical test equipment to check a charging system to balancing a tire within a 1/4 ounce or diagnosing an engine noise with a stethoscope.

Technicians enjoy diagnosing problems and using repair manuals to guide them through diagnosis and repair procedures. A interest in both mechanical and electrical operations is essential. Individuals should enjoy using tools to disassemble and reassemble components.

Any vocational classes and math courses related to fractions, decimals, and basic arithmetic are helpful. Good reading and writing ability is important to accurately interpret shop manual testing procedures and to accurately describe the repair procedures to the customer.

Currently, we have the automotive courses set up to be taken consecutively courses such Automotive Electrical I to be taken before Automotive Electrical II.

Many Automotive Technicians work for new car dealerships. The majority of positions available are in independent repair facilities. There are also many positions available within the automotive parts industry. Additionally, students may find careers in service advising and management to be rewarding.
