Overview: This course is designed to introduce students to safe methods of winter travel in Alaskan mountains, and methods for safely ascending same. To participate in the outdoor sessions, students must attend the lecture portion of this course.  Attendance is taken at the lectures and workshops.

Prerequisites: For outdoor sessions, students are expected to be in good physical shape, to have some experience skiing or snowshoeing and winter camping, be able to carry a heavy pack while skiing/snowshoeing, and own or rent sturdy/warm skiing, camping, and climbing gear. Prior attendance at earlier lectures and outdoor labs is required for participation in certain later workshops. Students must have validated health insurance coverage and sign appropriate participation waivers.  Participants must be 18 years of age.

Equipment Check: Purchase (or rental) and maintenance of skiing/snowshoeing and climbing gear is the responsibility of the student. Equipment checklists, on which the student certifies that required items of gear are present and in good shape, must be filled out, signed, and returned to trip leaders before each outdoor session.

Equipment: Some climbing gear such as crampons, ice axes may be rented from Wood Center. Sleeping bags, tents, and other camping gear may also be rented from the Wood Center. Students are strongly advised to obtain high quality double mountaineering boots/telmark boots with overboots.

Grading Policy: To obtain a passing grade students must be able to demonstrate to the instructor that they understand the basics of winter camping, frost bite/hypothermia prevention, avalanche awareness, and glacier travel. Attendance will be taken and is the best way to demonstrate an understanding of the above topics.

Disability Services: Instructor will work with the Office of Disabilities Services (203 WHIT #474-70043) to provide reasonable accommodations to students with disabilities.

Program Coordination: If you have questions or concerns about this course please contact the program coordinator for the Recreation Program at Tanana Valley Campus, Tina Christopher at 455-2848 or via e-mail fncmc1@uaf.edu.
